How fitting seeing as though Valentine’s Day has just passed by! If you’re like me, you spent the evening cozied up with a nice book and wishing that you could date one of the characters in said book. Don’t be ashamed- we all do it!
So here is a list of the greatest, most envious and beautifully written relationships in modern YA literature! (Sorry for possible spoilers!)
Bear in mind that some relationships may not be on here because they’re either classified as Children’s books or New Adult books (that’s right, Harry Potter, no page time for you).
- Edward Cullen and Bella Swan
I just had to include the craze couple of the early 2000s. Angsty romance is always a must and, at the time, Twilight was a killer romance that was picking up even more on the big screen. Edward Cullen is a classic heart-throb; a sexy, protective and…sparkly vampire. How could you not love this couple? Even if it is a bit of a guilty pleasure?
- Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark
I love this Hunger Games relationship simply because it was such a slow burner. We are in the modern times of the dreaded ‘insta-love’ and Everlark’s relationship proves that the characters don’t need to fall in love within the first few chapters. It was a trusting and gradual relationship that completed nicely at the end of the series.
- Tessa Gray and William Herondale/Jem Carstairs (Whichever floats your boat…ship).
I had to include this simply because this is the only love triangle ever where both ships are actually a thing- they’re both endgame! And somehow it’s not scandalous! Well played, Cassie Clare, well played. I personally prefer Will Herondale but this relationship can go either way. Both pairs love each other so much and the way the three are all tangled up in each other’s lies is dramatic and so entertaining.
- Tris Prior and Tobias Eaton (Four)
Now for the heart-breaking couple from the Divergent trilogy. Yes, these two had a bumpy road when, if they’d only communicated better (*inward fuming*) we could’ve saved ourselves a lot of heartbreak. Tris and Four are another power couple within YA that make us all wish we were as bad-ass as this pairing.
- Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood
And another Cassandra Clare couple makes the list (she could’ve been the only one to grace the list, to be honest, with the amount of ships she’s created). Don’t worry there’s one more to come…
Malec is probably one of the most popular ships nowadays and… I don’t blame them- they utterly deserve it with Magnus’ eccentric fabulousness and Alec’s introverted but bad-ass self. With adopted kids already, they’re the cutest couple going. The only thing that doesn’t sit right with me is the fact that Magnus is immortal and Alec isn’t… but we won’t think about that right now.
- Carswell Thorne and Crescent Moon (Cress)
This is a personal favourite of mine (although Cinder and Kai are close behind). Coming from Marissa Meyer’s stunning Lunar Chronicles, Cresswell is a perfect couple that had me squealing in joy. This is definitely a situation where opposites attract. Thorne is a hilarious and flirtatious character (many a girl has swooned over him) while Cress is an introverted genius who is also possibly the sweetest girl on earth…and the moon, evidently. Together, they are kick-ass and the way their relationship grows throughout this series is beautiful.
- Julian Blackthorn and Emma Carstairs
It’s the last Cassie Clare couple, I promise! These two are maybe my personal favourite ship in the Shadowhunter world. Lady Midnight was miles above the other series and Lord of Shadows is coming soon!!! I love both Emma and Julian- I don’t care if they’re doomed to fail. Julian is super swoon-worthy and only he could make the act of creating a shrine dedicated to your love romantic and not at all creepy or stalker-like. Regardless, they have to be endgame (please make them endgame!).
- Lara-Jean and Peter Kavinsky
Surprisingly, this is the first contemporary couple to enter this list. From the ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ trilogy, this couple is the hilarious and beyond cute couple that we all wish we had. It was a gradual and dramatic road for these two and we still don’t know how their relationship will end up (third book coming out soon) but, so far, they’re looking good. As well as a beautiful family aspect in these books, the story is a quick read and classic rom-com in book form.
There we have it! Of course there are many other powerful ships in YA (many many more) but we can’t be here all day! Feel free to comment your favourite ships of all the time!
Until next time,
