Joining Curiosity Quills for another edition of our Author Spotlight: Question & Answer Coloumn, is Wilbert Stanton, author of recently released steampunk fantasy, GEARS OF FATE, which hit Amazon on June 20, 2017!

In the comments, please join us in asking Wilbert Stanton anything you’d like to know about writing, his new book, and life in New York City, and his move from Queens to Brooklyn. Or you know, just throw something completely random at him to keep him on his toes!

Who are you and where do you call home right now?

My name is Wilbert Stanton and I live in the amazingly expensive New York City. Currently (or at the time of writing this) we are in the process of moving from Queens to Brooklyn, while the house I grew up in is in Manhattan. So I guess I have many homes.

Tell us about your latest book: your inspiration for it, how you got through your most difficult challenge in writing it, and what you love about it?

Gears of Fate is the book I’ve always wanted to write. I grew up loving all the 80s fantasy movies like Labyrinth, The Never Ending Story, Legend… etc. So I’ve always wanted to write a fantasy story with a rich imaginary world and characters. This book was basically me putting all my childhood dreams on paper. My most difficult challenge in writing it was really finding the time and motivation to sit and write. I found listening to Lindsey Sterling really put me in the mood. Most of this book was written with her music playing in the background, there is even a violin playing fairy that was inspired by her. I love this book because I feel like I finally captured the voice I wanted as a writer. My first book, which I will always love, never really gave me the passion and excitement this book does. In writing Gears I learned a lot about myself and grew as a person.

What are a few of your hobbies?

My favorite hobbies are reading, writing, gaming, and horror movies. Unfortunately, I rarely have time for any of those things. But the way I see it, this is a transitional period, where I have to put in all the hard work and hours so that I can one day spend a large amount of time doing my hobbies.

If you had your own food truck, what would it serve?

Hamburgers, lasagna, rice porridge (something my mom would always make for me), cookies, doughnuts, and apple pie.

What do you want to get better at doing, writing-wise?

As a writer I believe there’s always something I can get better at. I think most authors are their own worst enemies. So whenever I read my own work I think of a million different things I need to improve on. That being said I think I need to improve on my confidence. Sometimes fear holds me back from finishing a project. It’s a constant battle.

What TV series are you into right now and why?

I watch so many shows it’s hard to keep up. I recently finished Westworld, and it was fantastic! I normally don’t like westerns so I wasn’t going to bother with it. I gave one episode a try and was hooked. I think what I like the most about it is the whole idea of what makes us human.

What movie do you quote the most?

Not sure I quote movies much. I can recite practically every line from The Breakfast Club, The Crow, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World though.

What do you collect, even a little bit? Tell us about your favorite one.

I have to admit I’m not a collector. Although, I do keep all my books. It’s hard for me to give away, sell, or throw away any book I buy. My library has been growing since I was a teenager. My favorite book is my autographed copy of Stardust by Neil Gaiman, which was signed in person!

What’s your preferred genre of book when you just want to escape?

I’m a huge fan of YA novels in any genre. I guess if I had to pick a specific genre it would be YA fantasy, I particularly love stories with the Fey.

What do you like to do on vacation?

Honestly, I love lying in bed watching reality TV. There’s something about a big comfy bed and taking a break from my reality. I also like reading by the pool and drinking some sort of coconut, pineapple, rum drink.

Is there another genre you’ve been itching to write in?

I eventually want to finish a slasher horror that I’ve been working on. I absolutely love horror movies, in particular slasher films, so I want to pay my respects to the genre by creating something really great.

What unusual object do you like to bring with you if you leave the house?

My iPad. It’s loaded with books, comics, movies, and has Wi-Fi. All the life essentials.

If you had a champion racing pigeon, what would you name it and what would its tagline be?

Hibiscus: The flying rat… obviously.

Finally, give us one recommendation for something - movie, TV, game, food - that you enjoyed recently.

Wonder Woman! Wow what a great movie. Everything was perfect - the acting, script, cinematography… just everything. It’s got to the point where superhero movies are a dime a dozen, but Wonder Woman stands out amongst the rest. It’s a fantastic movie.

About Gears of Fate

Centuries have passed since the Fey conquered Earth, forcing mankind and gods alike to flee to the sky city Olympus. Forgotten gods walk amongst man, lost and powerless. Little do they suspect a second Fey war looms, and an unlikely duo will set in motion the gears of fate.

Zak Walker is a fringe rat living in the slums who would do anything to protect his sister, Alice. His neglectful father threatens to consign him to a life away from home on an airship, but he yearns for his life to mean something more than drudgery.

Princess Seneca Rose is the last surviving member of the Seelie royals. They tried to establish peace with mankind, but fell to the forces of Queen Mob and the Unseelie Court. Fleeing for her life, Seneca arrives on Olympus in hopes of uniting the forgotten gods against the oncoming Fey.

Zak couldn’t care less about the fate of Olympus, until faeries kidnap Alice. He doesn’t believe Seneca’s stories of faeries or gods, but soon has no choice but to accept their lives are intertwined. All his life, he’s dreamed of something more. If he cannot face the dangers that await down on Earth, the gods, mankind, and his sister Alice are all doomed.
