Joining Curiosity Quills for another edition of our Author Spotlight: Question & Answer Coloumn, is A.K. Morgen, author of newly released paranormal-romance, urban-fantasy, FLAME, which hit Amazon on February 21, 2017!
In the comments, please join us in asking A.K. Morgen anything you’d like to know about writing, her new book, and life in Little Rock, Arkansas. Or you know, just throw something completely random at her to keep her on her toes!
Who are you and where do you call home right now?
My name is Ayden Morgen (A.K. Morgen), and I live in Little Rock, Arkansas with my husband and our six furry minions.
Tell us about your latest book: one of your inspirations for it, how you got through your most difficult challenge in writing it, and what you love about it?
FLAME is the third book in the Ragnarök Prophesies series, based on the Norse apocalypse myth. The story picks up where FALL left off, and follows Arionna Jacobs and Dace Matthews as they learn the identities of Sköll and Hati and just how deeply they’ve entrenched themselves into Arionna and Dace’s lives. With Freki (the legendary wolf sharing Arionna’s soul) free of her cage and the apocalypse looming closer by the day, Arionna is forced to choose between the lives of her friends and her future with the alpha she loves.
The prologue was probably the hardest part of the entire book to get “just right”, as Dace has always been a little bit of an enigma, even to me. One of the biggest inspirations for that section was Christina Grimme’s cover of Sia’s song, Titanium. I listened to it on repeat until I finally had the prologue finished because the song fit Dace and his experiences so well. The prologue is also the only part of the book that I didn’t have to rewrite. Somewhere along the way while writing FLAME, I realized I’d lost the voices of the characters by bogging myself down in the details. I wrote, rewrote, and then did it again several times over, but the prologue managed to remain intact through it all.
What are a few of your hobbies?
I don’t have a lot of free-time between writing and working as a 911 dispatcher, but when I do, I love to read, hike, catch up on all those shows sitting on my DVR, and volunteer.
If you had your own food truck, what would it serve?
Desserts, with chocolate everything! Or tacos. Who doesn’t love tacos?
What do you want to get better at doing, writing-wise?
I’m always working at teaching myself not to get bogged down in the inner dialogue. My educational background is in Criminal Justice and Forensic Psychology, and I’m always really interested in how the mind works and what people are thinking at any given time. I tend to get bogged down in those details and forget that not everyone wants to know every little thought.
What TV series are you into right now and why?
I started watching Smallville years ago, but never managed to finish the show. I’m finally catching up on it now!
What movie do you quote the most?
I quote The Goonies, Pineapple Express and Half Baked a lot. In my defense on the last two, I spend a lot of time around police officers and those involved in various crimes, so drug use is a normal topic of conversation.
What do you collect, even a little bit? Tell us about your favorite one.
I collect leggings, Star Wars gadgets, and books. My favorites are the Death Star waffle maker my husband got me for Christmas, my Yoda and Darth Vader stuffed bears from his parents, and a copy of my grandfather’s favorite book, The Haunted Mesa by Louis L’Amour.
What’s your preferred genre of book when you just want to escape?
I’m a big fan of romance novels and classic literature. Some of my all-time favorite novels are Voltaire’s Candide, and the Wizard of Oz collection by L. Frank Baum. I reread them frequently.
What do you like to do on vacation?
I love low-key vacations, where we just make up plans as we go along and get to spend time just hanging out. I really love when the girls come to town for the weekend and we don’t set plans, we just make it up as we go, drink a lot of wine, and eat a lot of delicious food.
Is there another genre you’ve been itching to write in?
I actually write contemporary and erotic romance as Ayden K. Morgen, which have always been favorite genres of mine. I’ve always wanted to write historical fiction, but haven’t had a really good story demand my attention yet.
What unusual object do you like to bring with you if you leave the house?
I could probably survive in the woods for a week on the contents of my purse. The most unusual would probably have to be my 10 tubes of lip gloss and lip stick… I have a bit of an obsession with the stuff!
If you had a champion racing pigeon, what would you name it and what would its tagline be?
I would name it G.I. Go, and his tagline would be “Disaster Averted’ in homage to G.I. Joe, the pigeon that saved the day during the Italian Campaign in World War II.
Finally, give us one recommendation for something - movie, TV, game, food - that you enjoyed recently.
My husband and I have been really into The Travelers on Netflix recently. A group of people are sent from the future to avert disaster, and possess the bodies of their hosts at the exact moment of the host’s recorded death. They assume the lives of their hosts and work in secret to stop a future disaster that changes the world. It’s a really interesting show, with a great cast.
Who do you trust when betrayal threatens to destroy everything you hold dear?
When Arionna Jacobs fled town in a desperate bid to save Dace Matthews, she never expected the chaos she would leave in her wake. Now her closest friend is dead, and another is missing, forcing Ari to return to face the devastating consequences of her actions and the broken boy she left behind.
Her problems are only just beginning. Even as her bond with Dace grows stronger, Arionna finds herself weakening when Freki’s cage shatters. Fighting the wolf for control is tearing her apart piece by piece. And at every turn, she finds that those she’s put her faith in aren’t who they seem, bringing her face to face with Sköll and Hati. As the depth of their betrayal is revealed, Freki spirals out of control, and Arionna must face her greatest fear: losing herself to the fierce wolf within.
The world balances on the edge of a blade, and one wrong move will destroy it all. With few allies she can trust and little choice left, Arionna must decide between the lives of her friends and her own future with the alpha she loves. Will she be able to stand firm for the sake of the world, or will she falter in the face of defeat?
